++++ Things are going well for Andreja Kuluncic with her art. At present she not only has a contribution on show at Manifesta, but also at the documenta which has just opened. Apart from her, only the artist couple Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas have succeeded in doing that.
Andreja Kuluncic, who was born in Croatia in 1968 and lives in Zagreb, works on the social body. She is often concerned with material injustices and ways to overcome them. In her series, artist from... for Manifesta, she questions participating artists about their income in 2001, compares this information with the average annual income in the country of origin of the artist concerned, and puts the results on twenty public advertising spaces in the Frankfurt inner-city along with portraits of the artists. The posters employ the aesthetics and strategy of advertising, but with regard to content they could hardly the more different. They make visually striking the discrepancy between reality and the prejudice regarding artists according to which the taxpayer first forks out for artists so that later on they can earn monstrous sums for their art works. Some of those questioned said that their income was zero euros. In relation to this, 4,220 euros is an enormous sum. The only catch is that this amount is to be compared with 26,000 euros as the average income in the artist’s country. Furthermore, Andreja Kuluncic's posters make the enormous material discrepancy between western and eastern European countries plain. Whereas average income in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands amounts to 25,000, 18,000 and 24,000 euros, respectively, in the Czech Republic, Macedonia and Romania they are 5,600, 2,160 or merely 1,200 euros, respectively.
For documenta, Kuluncic developed the internet program, Distributive Justice, together with the group of the same name. At the internet address, www.distributive-justice.com, visitors can inform themselves about problems and theories of the market economy and their mechanisms of distribution and thus in a playful way create or discover a desirable society according to the theoretical model of society to which you adhere (but be careful, the results are surprising, if not totally disconcerting).
In 2001, by the way, Andreja Kuluncic's income amounted to 3,010 euros, compared with an average annual income in Croatia of 5,700 euros. And that although for her things are going well with her art...

Künstlerporträts (15): Andreja Kuluncic
Es läuft gut mit der Kunst für Andreja Kuluncic. Derzeit ist sie nicht nur mit einem Beitrag auf der Manifesta vertreten, sondern ebenso auf der gerade eröffneten Documenta. Und das ist außer ihr nur noch dem Künstlerpaar Nomeda und Gediminas Urbonas gelungen.
Andreja Kuluncic, 1968 in Kroatien geboren und in Zagreb lebend, arbeitet am Gesellschaftskörper. Um materielle Ungerechtigkeiten geht es ihr oft und um Wege, sie zu überwinden. Bei ihrer Serie artist from… für die Manifesta befragt sie teilnehmende Künstler über ihr Einkommen im Jahr 2001, stellt diese Informationen dem durchschnittlichen Jahreseinkommen im Herkunftsland des Betreffenden gegenüber und bringt die Ergebnisse mit den Portraits der Künstler an 20 öffentlichen Werbeflächen in Frankfurts Innenstadt an. Die Plakate nutzen Ästhetik und Strategie der Werbung, könnten inhaltlich aber gar nicht gegensätzlicher sein. Sie machen die Diskrepanz augenfällig zwischen Realität und dem Vorurteil vom Künstler, der dem Steuerzahler erst auf der Tasche liege, um dann Unsummen mit seiner Arbeit zu verdienen. Einige der Befragten geben ein Einkommen von null Euro an. Da sind 4220 Euro geradezu üppig - der Haken ist nur, dass dieser Angabe 26 000 Euro an Einkommen in der Heimat des Befragten gegenüber stehen. Darüber hinaus machen Andreja Kuluncics Plakate das enorme materielle Gefälle zwischen west- und osteuropäischen Ländern deutlich: Beträgt der durchschnittlichem Jahresverdienst in Dänemark, Deutschland oder den Niederlanden 25 000, 18 000 und 24 000 Euro, sind es in der Tschechoslowakei, Mazedonien oder Rumänien gerade einmal 5600, 2160 oder gar nur 1200 Euro.
Für die Documenta hat Kuluncic mit der Gruppe "Distributive Justice" das gleichnamige web-Programm entwickelt. Unter www.distributive-justice.com können Besucher sich über Probleme und Theorien der Marktwirtschaft und deren Verteilungsmechanismen informieren und so spielerisch die wünschenswerte Gesellschaft kreieren oder entdecken, welchem theoretischen Gesellschaftsmodell man anhängt (aber Vorsicht, die Ergebnisse sind überraschend, wenn nicht entlarvend!).
Andreja Kuluncics Einkommen betrug 2001 übrigens 3010 Euro - gegenüber einem durchschnittlichen Jahreseinkommen in Kroatien von 5700 Euro. Und das, obwohl es bei ihr doch gerade gut läuft mit der Kunst…
