Artist portraits (39): Daniel Garcia Andujar Frankfurter Rundschau | 12.07.2002
****************************************************************
++++ The work of Daniel Garcia Andujar is present at Manifesta 4, and then again, it is not. In any case, it can be seen from anywhere on the internet, because the Spanish artist who was born in 1966 has contributed a web-site to Manifesta which is devoted to a critical engagement with art. Under the address www.e-manifesta.org he has created a portal which is primarily intended for discussing Manifesta topics. One Manifesta topic, for example, is how the art critics in the daily press have discussed the exhibition. It's obvious that this will be controversial, and that is precisely what happens, on various levels of competence.
It is interesting to observe how people express themselves anonymously when they have an opportunity to do so. Other art-related topics too such as documenta are also discussed at e-manifesta. To compare the two exhibitions with each other – the one with a worldwide reputation established over decades as the most important exhibition of contemporary art, the other comparatively young, focusing on unknown artists and with a much smaller budget – is not entirely appropriate.
Daniel Garcia Andujar is not responsible for the contributions of the participants in the forum. His job is to collect discussion material and make it available. You can therefore find other aspects of modern living at his web-site, for instance, an article by the fashion critic, Suzy Menkes, about the new Givenchy collection, or the Frankfurt debate about the TAT and William Forsyth.
Daniel Garcia Andujar therefore does not exhibit in the conventional sense. Rather, he provides a platform. You can visit it completely non-virtually at Frankensteiner Hof. In the Trespassing Room, the lecture theatre and location of the online presentations, you'll find the headquarters of e-manifesta. The fact that Andujar had himself photographed holding a mobile telephone in front of the skyline may represent for him the advantages of being part of a technological network, but perhaps it is also an indication that he is a very busy artist. He is, after all, also the director of the online projects, art.net.dortmund.de, e-valencia.org and e-barcelona.org. hoh
Frankensteiner Hof, Große Rittergasse 103, and on the internet at www.e-Manifesta.org until 25 August
