++++ ‘The aesthetics of modernity once promised nothing less than reconciliation with a fragmented world. The key to this was the suggestion of similarity. Even the most disparate things became psychically related through visual analogy formations, and the experience of the world, exploded apart into many autonomous disciplines each with their own language, seemed to be both suspended and preserved in modernity’s crystalline vocabulary of forms.’1 In the works shown at Manifesta 4, Pumhösl ‘appropriates the formal language of modernity in the sense of a thoroughly poetic critique’.2 ‘He refers to abstraction as the forgotten canon of image production and relates ironically to the often naive analogy between the natural sciences and their alchemistic counterparts in art.’
