Finished the sculpture program at the Lisbon ARCO School of Art and Visual Communication in 2001 and is currently enrolled in a MFA program at the Pratt Institute in New York. ++++ Sancho Silva’s training in philosophy and mathematics is manifest in his work through the constant discrepancy between the visible and the intelligible. This is the gap of perception, of the systems we use to identify images and signs. Nearly all Silva’s projects lay out guided trajectories for the viewer, circuits imposed on him within spaces that are inverted, oblique or simply blocked. His closed architectures, his corridors and his extensions transform ways of access and disorient the gaze, displacing the objective parameters of place and its representation (the museum) towards the terrain of emotion, subjectivity and personal vision. The BUNKER that he is making for Manifesta 4 is a structure incorporating both the exterior and the interior of its space, which it extends. It is a freak annexe leading to a dead-end, the dead end of observation, division and immobility. (Stéphanie Moisdon Trembley)
