++++ Jonas Dahlberg’s films apparently show unending spatial formations or architectural fragments, as though an eye looking from a place of complete control were searching through a building or town. The viewer, who also feels exposed to this all-seeing eye, gradually comes to understand that this control is being exerted over a model. Dahlberg thus also offers us his view of the power of the artist as omnipotent within a highly restricted creative field. The model is simultaneously perfection and limitation. The ambivalence about seeing, and also the insight into the inadequacy of artistic control, evoke in the viewer a kind of melancholy. The filmed model’s references to Hammershøi’s room painting, to shabby hotel corridors on film, or to functionalism being condemned to represent a bygone future, serve to accentuate the ambiguity.
